Canon brings Eye Detection AF to 4K video at 120fps and adds the All-I 60p XF-AVD to the Canon EOS C70 Cinema Camera

Canon has announced a new firmware update for the Canon EOS C70 cinema camera. But don’t get too excited just yet. They announced it, but it won’t be available for download until December 8th. I can never understand why companies do this. Why not just announce when it’s ready to download? Anyway, the new firmware brings a number of much-requested features to the camera.

The features, according to Canon, will “help improve workflow and functionality for the content creation, live production and documentary market.” This will be a free firmware update for Canon EOS C70 owners and should be a welcome addition for those shooting with one.

The full firmware update instructions look something like this:

Canon USA, Inc., a leading provider of digital imaging solutions, today announced a feature-rich firmware update for the EOS C70 4K digital cinema camera. The suite of feature upgrades coming via a firmware update will help improve workflow and functionality for the content creation, live production and documentary markets. The firmware update will be available as a free download on December 8, 2022*. Top upgrades include:

Eye-detection autofocus (AF), face-detection AF and subject-tracking AF during slow and fast recording (24-120p): Canon’s eye-detection AF, face-detection AF and subject-tracking AF enable more accurate autofocus performance at accelerated frame rates to ensure you Don’t miss that crucial shot to minimize storage costs and speed up file transfers. This new file format allows for easier file handling and the ability to record to an SD card. Canon IP-based XC Protocol: XC protocol enables remote control of camera settings of multiple cameras via Canon RC-IP100 remote control or other third-party. Party XC protocol capable remote control panels.Canon 709 Custom Picture Profile: The Canon 709 profile has the same dynamic range as the current Wide DR profile setting with great contrast. This gives your footage a rich, cinematic look right out of the box without the need for time-consuming color grading. CMT 709 “Viewing Assist”: Allows viewing of the camera’s video output on a REC.709 compatible monitor when shooting in Canon Log 2 or Canon Log 3. CMT 709 is a great starting point for any color grading and helps to make adjustments during of the shot, reducing the time needed to edit the file in post-production. Full communication with EF-Mount Flex-Zoom 45-135mm and CINE-SERVO 15-120mm lenses: Communication features include T-Stop display, Chromatic Aberration Correction, Dual Pixel CMOS AF and Dual Pixel Focus Guide.

Additional firmware update upgrades include:

Preserve camera settings when switching between normal and slow and fast shooting modes. Audio 4-channel meter now visible in the level meter on the camera’s LCD.
